Why Is It?
Questions are a good way to teach. Various interrogations help to emphasize and call attention to information. The Bible makes good use of questions, sometimes even rhetorical questions (a question where the answer is obvious, one designed to produce an effect), to teach truths of value and benefit.
Could I ask some questions about some things that are rather puzzling to me?
WHY IS IT people can work all week with sinus difficulties, a nagging backache, a hammer-hitting headache; a virus of some sort or the other; denture sores; the pain of neuritis, neuralgia, or arthritic discomfort, even the common cold; then stump a toe ever so slightly on Saturday night and have to miss services on Lords day? Why is that?
WHY IS IT people understand clearly (even can quote–sometimes verbatim) the football rule for keeping both feet in bounds following the reception of a pass; the baseball rule covering a balk by the pitcher; what it means when a basketball player “palms the ball;” what constitutes “high-sticking” in hockey; but can’t tell even a close friend what one must do to be saved? Why is that?
WHY IS IT people can afford all the newest “things” for home, business, office, or the car–things like trash mashers, leaf rakers, wood cutters; stereos with tweeters woofers, and bluetooth capabilities; spoke wheel covers for their tires, rear view cameras; computers with enough memory to hold their library of favorite books; money for their choice movies, concerts, plays, and special ball games; but when the collection plate is passed they have “too hard a time making a living to give anything right now”? Why is that?
WHY IS IT people can read instructions about how to assemble bicycles, tricycles, motor cycles; household appliances, sister’s new toy kitchen, Fido’s new dog house (the one that goes in the bedroom); a complicated new computer program of some sort; a new home theater sound system; or a new tool shed; but when it comes to spiritual tings they just can’t quite “get hold” of the things necessary for the salvation of their souls? Why is that?
WHY IS IT people can spend hours on top of hours helping the PTA, FFA, CAA, CIA, MPA; the Heart fund, the Cancer Drive the March of Dimes, MS Campaign; Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Eagle Scouts ; the Little Brothers, Big Brothers. Boys and Girls Clubs; the Democrats or Republicans, maybe the Independents, but they just “can’t find time” to pass out a few gospel meeting announcements? Why is that?
WHY IS IT people can spend untold amounts of money on pills–antibiotics, miracle drugs, tranquilizers (with mood elevators), energizers, memory enhancers, dietary supplements; exercisers of various kinds, weight machines, muscle developers, gym machines, walkers of various kinds, machines that make better abs, cure flab, shoes that take care of flat feet; gadgets and drugs to cure baldness and poochie stomachs; sleeping aids; eating aids; talking aids; all in an effort to “take care of yourself,” but when it comes to the items in the Bible designed to aid in the care of the spiritual body, “there just isn’t enough time to go around”? Why is that?
WHY IS IT people will try new products, new designs, new styles for the hair, clothes; new games, new methods, new arrangements; new materials, new medications; new ipads, iphones, or new iwatches– almost any new i-anything–but when it comes to trying the Christian way of living, they “just aren’t interested right now”? Why is that?
People, it’s time to wake up! It’s time we aligned our priorities. It’s time to see that we must given an account to how we lived life. But WHY IS IT that some folks will listen to everybody else before they will listen to God?
